Autumn Season

Los renglones torcidos de Dios

Autumn Season marks a cold, unsettled passage toward winter. The rains have altered the Castilian landscape without renewing it: they have taken away summer’s yellow but have not restored spring’s green, leaving the country exposed and desolate.

A Season Between Autumn and Winter

The season is described as hybrid and indecisive, already close to winter. Cold is expected to arrive early, and snow is considered possible by the time the travelers reach Adanero. The forecast makes the transition more than a calendar distinction: winter is pressing into the journey before the landscape has recovered from autumn.

The Stripped Castilian Landscape

The account sets this season against the more vivid appearances of spring and summer. Spring’s greenery brings the landscape to life; summer’s yellow cereals, ready for harvest, make old Castile a subject for painters and writers. By contrast, autumn rain has only erased the summer color. The central Spanish plain appears like a decomposing body, with rocks showing through scant cultivable soil like bones beneath vanished flesh. The image turns seasonal change into bodily exposure and decay.

Place in the Book

Autumn Season also appears as a labeled unit in the book’s closing list of divisions. Its bleak landscape description gives that seasonal designation a particular weight: this is not the abundant green of spring or the ripe color of summer, but a drained interval on the threshold of winter.
